In a forward-looking partnership, Swedish startup Edeva AB teamed up with RISE and CitCom.ai to explore AI for optimising traffic data management and analysis. Initially, RISE used Edeva’s data to develop a traffic prediction model, but as the project evolved, Edeva transitioned from data provider to client, seeking RISE’s expertise in AI refinement and regulatory compliance through tailored workshops.

Edeva is well known for its advanced traffic management systems, including sensors and preventive measures to counteract vehicles speeding at sensitive locations; in proximity to schools, accident-prone pedestrian crossings, critical city intersections et cetera. Their primary technology monitors traffic volume, velocities and vehicle classifications for environmental compliance, creating critical insights for urban planners and traffic regulators.

For example, in our project case study, Edeva tracked a daily average of 800+ non-conformant, older vehicles, in the City of Stockholm, unlawfully passing through a zone restricted to cars and trucks abiding to the Euro 6 emission level.

At RISE, our goal was to ensure that Edeva's AI solutions were both robust and compliant with evolving regulations. By providing tailored expertise and focusing on explainability, we helped Edeva integrate AI in a way that is both future-proof and trustworthy.
Alex Jonsson, Researcher, RISE

Edeva did not have AI capabilities in their public offering, the format and volume of data they collect proved highly suitable for building robust AI models. Working closely with RISE and CitCom.ai and the City of Stockholm, the project also developed means to create so-called synthetic data – essentially data that's artificially created to mimic real-world data - based on real-world scenarios to test and refine models, in cases where additional data is needed for validation or testing.

On the compliance front, CitCom.ai provided critical legal and ethical guidance, ensuring the AI systems met EU’s emerging AI Act regulations. The partnership involved interpreting complex legal frameworks and integrating considerations such as data interoperability under Interoperable Europe. These insights were invaluable for Edeva, as they navigated the challenges of incorporating AI on future services without compromising on legal compliance or transparency.

CitCom.ai's approach also includes tests on performance, robustness, ethical and diversity standards, and Explainable AI—ensuring that Edeva could not only trust the AI model but also understand its decision-making processes. Looking at various perspectives on data collection and use of AI for traffic prediction were key for Edeva’s future-proofing strategy, especially as the AI landscape evolves with new certifications and standards.

RISE's established policy services were instrumental in making sense of the complex AI regulations, transforming vast amounts of information into actionable insights for Edeva. As the AI landscape and regulations continue to develop, CitCom.ai remains a critical partner in helping businesses like Edeva navigate these challenges.

The collaboration with RISE and the CitCom project has been crucial for us at Edeva. Their expertise in AI and assistance in interpreting complex regulations allowed us to ensure that our systems are not only technically advanced but also legally and ethically sound. This has given us the confidence to continue developing our AI-focused solutions and strengthened our position to face future challenges. – David Eskilsson, CEO, Edeva
